As we step into a new year, it’s natural to think about goals and intentions. A new year feels like a fresh slate, a chance to evaluate where we’ve been and where we’re going. That's why prayerful reflection is invaluable for realigning our lives with God’s purpose and priorities.
There’s a saying: “Sometimes we go forward by looking back.” Reflecting on the past year can provide clarity for the road ahead. What worked well? What didn’t? Were your efforts aligned with your God-given purpose, or were you busy with distractions that seemed good but ultimately led to stress and worry?
In Luke 10:38-42, we find Mary and Martha, both in the same physical place with Jesus, but engaging very differently. Martha’s busyness distracted her from what Jesus called “the better thing”—sitting at His feet, listening to Him, and soaking in His presence. This story reminds us how easy it is to get caught up in lesser priorities and miss the peace, guidance, and benefits that come from choosing the “better thing.”
Maybe as you reflect on the past year, you realize you’ve been navigating without a clear map. Perhaps you’ve taken on too much, said “yes” to too many distractions, or veered off course from the purpose God has for you. Life is short, and it doesn’t automatically arrange itself into the right priorities—we have to be intentional.
This is why prayer is so essential. You didn’t create yourself; God did. He knows your purpose, your calling, and the path He’s set before you. Taking the time to pray and reflect helps you hear His voice, refocus your vision, and align your priorities with His plan.
As we enter this new year, I encourage you to take a moment to pause. Be still before God. Ask Him to show you what needs to change and what truly matters. Let this be the year where you fully embrace His purpose and the peace that comes with it.
